One of the first websites to start writing about Barnes and Noble’s Nook eReader was Nook Share

A month before the original Nook was first released back in 2009, Nook Share started writing about it and was one of the few sites out there with information about the Nook for those looking for warranty or other Barnes and Noble information about the product. Eventually, the site began to focus on accessories for the site like nook covers, cases, and lights, but most recently the site has refocused on what you can do on the Nook – specifically the Nook Color, “The Readers Tablet”.

Focus on Content

Nook Share has started focusing on the benefits of the Nook, the top Nook magazines, and the top Nook newspapers. The site has always been ahead of the curve and this pivot towards content like ebooks, magazines, newspapers, and apps for the Nook Color will help give ebook readers what they need now that they’re ‘protected’. I asked writer, Erich Stauffer, what his thoughts were behind the switch and this is what he had to say:

We haven’t given up on covering nook covers, cases, and accessories, we’ve just added more content about what you can do with a Nook helping to answer that question, ‘Why buy a nook?’. You know, the tablet pc market is blowing up and ereaders are going to face more and more competition going forward. We believe in this device and that is why we are helping to promote it’s use, not just what to protect it with.

Over the last year, the most popular search term on this website has been “digition”, but what exactly are people searching for? Our about page refers to digition as a “digital edition of a book, magazine, or newspaper,” but what do most people think of when they are searching for that term?

Google returns a range of links from the “Activa3 Digition MtxViewer,” which is a “High resolution video viewer” to “DIGITIVE”, which is Digitive InfoLabs, Inc., a “100% Internet Technology Company, which specializes in providing IT Consulting and Software Services in the field of Internet Technology, E-Commerce and B2B EDI solutions,” to the mysterious “Three Digit Ion”. There is even a link to “Digtion”, which is another computer hardware company out of Indonesia that sometimes misspells their name “Digition”.

Google image results show a different story, displaying images of three digit combination locks, three digit clocks, and digital ion batteries. Not suprisingly ebooks, emagazines, and enewspapers are nowhere to be found in search results – except for those search results that include this site, Digitions. We believe that the term may still come into it’s own in the future and until then we are fine with being at the top for our own search term. In the mean time, you can continue to find exactly what you are looking for on Amazon’s Kindle ebook store.

Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble, and Sony are all on the hook with a new rule Apple announced for apps the run on the iOS platform, which includes the iPhone, iPod, and the iPad.  Essentially, if your app sells an e-book, that e-book needs to be sold also – or in some cases instead of – in Apple’s e-book store, part of iTunes.  Additionally, apps that allow you to read books purchased at stores other than Apple’s iTunes may also be subject to these same rules, meaning that if you want to read a book you purchased from Amazon.com or Barnes and Noble, you can only read it if it is also for sale in iTunes.  This really sounds like Apple is playing the ‘Soup Nazi’ here and if you want to have an app on the iOS you have to follow the rules, or else, “no soup for you.” The question is, how can Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble, and Sony compete in that type of market when they are giving the app away for free and subsidizing the hardware (Kindle, Nook, and Reader, respectively) in order to make money off of e-book purchases?  That is something each company is going to have to figure out on their own.

Anyone who received a gadget this year has felt the need to purchase add-ons, customizations, or accessories for whatever Santa brought them this year.  It may be an extra SD card for your ereader or a Flash card for your camera.  It might be a car charger for your new mobile phone, a case for your Kindle, or a cover for your Nook.  Whatever your need, there are a few sites that can help you find what you need to customize your new gear.

Barnes & Noble’s new Nook Color ($250) is the first major ebook reader with a color touch screen (Amazon’s Kindle is still black and white with no plans to change soon). It has only been one year since the release of the first (black-and-white) Nook, but already it has gained market share and features, which Barnes & Noble says is due to former Palm employees designing it out of a new shop in Silicon Valley.

The color screen is bright and beautiful. Magazines, for example, look spectacular. You can subscribe to any of 70 magazines (the first two weeks are free) or buy individual issues. Some magazines even have an Article View: a scrolling, vertical, uncluttered column of black-on-white text that’s easy to read. The original magazine layout lies behind it for context.

Children’s books also benefit enormously from color, and they get special treatment on the Color Nook. You can tap the text on any page to enlarge it. Some titles — 300 by year’s end, according to Barnes & Noble — offer a ‘Read to Me’ button, so that your young reader can follow along with a recorded voice. This raises the question, “Was the Nook Color specifically designed for kids?” We may never know, but we know that if you can get a child used to a technology young, you’ll have a customer for life.

Need nook covers or accessories?

Google, the great search giant in the cloud, is now in the ebook business. As stated in Apple Insider, “We designed Google eBooks to be open,” said Abraham Murray, product manager for Google Books. “Many devices are compatible with Google eBooks — everything from laptops to netbooks to tablets to smartphones to e-readers. With the new Google eBooks Web Reader, you can buy, store and read Google eBooks in the cloud. That means you can access your e-books like you would messages in Gmail or photos in Picasa—using a free, password-protected Google account with unlimited e-books storage. Launching Google eBooks is an initial step toward giving you greater access to vast variety of information and entertainment found in books,” Murray said. “Our journey has just begun.”

Before Google’s eBookstore was released, it was previously known as Google Editions. Google’s announcement for the launch of the eBookstore wasn’t necessarily a surprise, as a recent report from The Wall Street Journal said that Google would be ready to launch their digital bookstore by the end of 2010.  Google Books first launched in 2004, which set out to make the information stored in the “world’s books” accessible and useful online. Since then, Google Books has digitized more than 15 million books from more than 35,000 publishers, more than 40 libraries, and more than 100 countries in more than 400 languages. This deep repository of knowledge and culture will continue to be searchable through Google Books search in the research section alongside the ebook store, which launched on December 6, 2010.

Ebooks range in price from $6.99 to $23.99 with the majority being $9.99 or $14.99.  Expect little difference in price with Amazon.com eBooks for the Kindle. The primary difference is in how you will be able to read the ebooks.  Google is essentially selling access to the ebook anyhow, anywhere, while Kindle eBooks are locked down to a device or special software.  Google eBooks display in a browser or in apps.  You can search the ebooks (it is Google, by the way) or you can also browse the following categories:

If you’re an avid reader or a teacher then sooner or later you’ll find an interest in reading lists. Reading lists are lists compiled by people who have found a common themes among a group of literary works. This can be a great benefit for the reader who has just read a spectacular book and wants to find more like it. If the book is on a reading list already, then there is a good chance that the reader will find the other books on the list interesting as well. And for teachers who need help picking out a curriculum, you will be happy to find that much of the work has probably already been done for you by other people making reading lists that form a kind of curriculum.

Amazon.com has Listmania! and there are books on various reading lists, both general and about certain subjects. Sometimes there are so many lists and books that it becomes hard to filter out which ones are the best or most useful. That is where web sites like Reading Lists come in handy. The author has done the research to find what books and resources about reading lists are the best for any number of topics. For example, there is a page on homeschool reading lists for those who teach their children at home and one on list on ancient western classics. When I think of Western Classics, I think John Wayne, but that is why this website is so great-it reminds us that the original western classics were by Homer and Plato, both authors now available on ebook.
